Śrī Jayadeva’s Daśāvatāra-stotra

Dasavatara-stotra and Gita-govinda, both written by Sri Jayadeva Gosvami, are still being sung daily before Lord Jagannatha Deva for His pleasure. Jayadeva Gosvami’s Dasavatara-stotra is respected everywhere in India. The Dasavatara Deities are worshipped daily in the Jagannatha Temple at Sri Purushottama-dhama and many other temples of India. In the Vaishnava lineages of Assam, harinama-saṅkīrtanaa is performed by singing about the appearance and pastimes of the ten avataras. Srila Gurudev elaborately explains the sixth verse of Upadeshamrit. He advises not to incur offense to any Vaishnava by observing his external behavior or bodily defects. If we do so then we will be deprived of his grace. Dhruva reached to the planet of Vishnu, which is above the three worlds and the constellation of the Seven Ṛṣis. The Lord, who is very affectionate to His devotees, granted Dhruva the supreme destination, but He did not give the same blessing to his stepbrother, Uttama, and his stepmother, Suruci, who had committed offenses. In the initial part of the harikatha, Srila Gurudev, explains about jiva-tatva and Bhagavat-tatva, the understanding of which is the foundation of bhakti-yoga. In a very easy language, giving simple examples, he explains the nature of the soul as the eternally existing knowledge and blissful principle. Then, giving scriptural evidences, he vividly explains Bhagavat-tatva. He sings the glories of Srimad Bhagavatam and names Srimad Bhagavatam Himself as Bhakti-yoga. Later, he narrates the discussion between Videha Raj Nimi and Navayogendra, the nine sons of Rishabha Deva. And at the end, he concludes the harikatha by describing Mahamatra of all the four yugas and strongly emphasizing on chanting of the Mahamatra to be the only path of getting the ultimate objective Krishna-prema.

Sri Vedavyas Muni has said - 'śṛṇvataḥ śraddhayā nityaṁ gṛṇataś ca sva-ceṣṭitam kālena nātidīrgheṇa bhagavān viśate hṛdi' - Srimad Bhagavatam 2.8.4. (Translation: Persons who hear Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam regularly and are always taking the matter very seriously will have the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna manifested in their hearts within a short time.) Two conditions have to be fulfilled. There should be ‘sraddha’ — firm faith i.e. faith that by serving Supreme Lord Sri Krishna I serve all. That is the life of bhajan. As you pour water to the root of the tree, the whole tree is nourished. You give food in the stomach, the whole body is nourished. Like that, if you serve Achyuta, Sri Hari, who is all unifying principle, you serve all. That is the first condition. The second condition is, we should hear with firm faith and always, everyday, continuously, eternally. Then I can catch hold of Hari in my heart, very soon. Wherever you maybe you should do this.

Who is Purushottama?

Srila Gurudev explains who Purushottam is. Krishna Himself instructed us in Srimad Bhagavad Gita, "I am beyond the comprehension of the mind, intelligence and senses of the conditioned souls of this world. I am the Supremely superior to the formless impersonal brahman and also Paramatma, the object of worship of gyānis and yogis, so I am called Purushottam." So Purushottama is the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna Himself. Also, the fountainhead of all incarnations, the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appeared in this special Kaliyuga, taking the mood and complexion of His internal potency Srimati Radharani, as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, He is also Purushottam. He is identical with Krishna. Lord Jagannath, who resides in Puri Dham is also Purushottam, He is Krishna Himself. So we have to serve Sri Krishna, Lord Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Jagannathdev in this holiest month.

Actually, all the milk-women of Vraja prepares yogurt, milk, butter and everything for the service of Krishna only. But Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda Devi do not allow Krishna to eat at any other place. So what? Krishna is bhakta-vatsala, subdued by pure devotion, He always thinks about fulfilling the desire of His devotees. So, He becomes a thief and steals yogurt, butter, etc. from the houses of gopa-gopis to give them satisfaction.

Surrender To Sri Guru

Srila Gurudeva in his harikatha on the Disappearance Day of Srila Ramanujacharya, narrates an instance they often heard from Param Gurudev. It is from the life of Sri Varadarya and his wife who were disciples of Sri Ramanjacharya. It is an extremely rare case of self-sacrifice. The couple being very poor, the woman decides to sell her body to get the necessary provisions to serve Sri Guru and his disciples. The all-knowing Guru protects her chastity by advising her to offer some of the maha-maha-prasad to the evil merchant and the merchant’s heart changes instantly on honoring the prasad, he begs for forgiveness of the woman and then takes diksha from the Guru and serves the couple life long. At the end of the katha Srila Gurudev remembered a similar example of Kusum Kumari Devi, a disciple of Param Gurudev, who sold her only asset, her house, to serve Gurudev and the vaishnavas without thinking about her future.
