Verse 2: The Six Faults That Destroy Bhakti (Atyāhāraḥ Prayāsaś Ca)
अत्याहारः प्रयासश्च प्रजल्पो नियमाग्रहः। जनसङ्गश्च लौल्यं च षड्भिर्भक्तिर्विनश्यति॥ २॥
atyāhāraḥ prayāsaś ca prajalpo niyamāgrahaḥ jana-saṅgaś ca laulyaṁ ca ṣaḍbhir bhaktir vinaśyati
One's devotional service is spoiled when one becomes too entangled in the following six practices: (1) eating more than required or collecting more funds than necessary; (2) overendeavoring for mundane things; (3) talking unnecessarily about mundane subjects; (4) practicing scriptural rules merely for the sake of following them rather than for spiritual advancement, or rejecting scriptural rules and acting independently; (5) associating with worldly-minded persons; and (6) being greedy for mundane achievements.
A sincere devotee must strictly avoid these six impediments to protect their tender creeper of devotion (bhakti-latā) from the elephant offense (vaiṣṇava-aparādha) and material degradation.
